On Tuesday before the IRONMAN World Championship, athletes and their families join for a walk through downtown Kailua-Kona, the Parade of Nations. The parade begins at the King Kamehameha Beach Hotel and heads to the Expo, past the pier and Hale Halalai, the city’s shopping center.
As in 2016, the Brazilian delegation was one of the largest in the parade, cheered throughout the route for its happy spirits. However, the apex of the 2017 edition was when, in the city center, Germans and Frenchmen stood facing each other, singing their hymns loudly with the help of megaphones. In the end, the “captains” of the two countries embraced each other and two-time IRONMAN World Champion Jan Frodeno went on to encourage his fellow countrymen.
